The Comeback of Card Games

In a world where social media, bright advertisements and fast paced digital games are in abundance, why is it that we’re struggling to pay attention? Well, maybe it’s because there’s no need to stay engaged in a world where your attention is taken from you, instead of given by you.

As a result of this, we’re seeing a revival of card games. A place where friends and family meet up, skills and strategy meet, and attention is given willingly (unless you’re looking to lose!).

Classic card games are the antidote to a world of screens and at Priory Wareham, we’re loving it, which is why we’re hosting Priory Bridge Club.

Running every Thursday from 10am – 12pm, from October 2nd 2025 to December 18th 2025.

So join us if you can, otherwise, we have put together a blog discussing the importance of card games, for your mental and social wellbeing and how to play bridge!

Let the games begin!

Card game benefits for your mental health

The science behind this revival is compelling. Research consistently demonstrates that card games are linked to improved cognitive function and may significantly lower the risk of developing cognitive impairment. When we engage with cards, we’re exercising critical thinking, problem-solving, and memory skills – complex intellectual functions that keep our brains healthy and active.

For older adults especially, the mental health benefits of card games are profound. Studies show that regular play can help increase brain volume in various regions, leading to improved thinking skills and executive function. These high-level cognitive processes control our goal-directed behaviours, from planning and decision-making to reasoning and judgment. Bridge, in particular, has been associated with a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, making it far more than just an entertaining pastime.

Everything’s digital now, but do we feel less, or more connected?

Beyond cognitive advantages, card games address a crucial social need in our technology-saturated era. Whilst digital platforms can connect families across continents, they often leave us craving genuine, face-to-face interaction. The pandemic amplified this desire, with people playing cards “more than ever” as a way to disconnect digitally and reconnect physically.

Card games offer an enjoyable, relaxing way of being together – creating space for conversation, laughter, and shared experiences. They serve as important social rituals where we can unwind, talk freely, and bond with our community. What began as a lockdown necessity has evolved into a meaningful mechanism for making memories and deepening relationships. For seniors, playing games with peers promotes socialisation that contributes significantly to quality of life.

How to play bridge

If you’re intrigued by the benefits but wondering how to play bridge, you’re not alone. Bridge is a trick-taking card game played by four people in two partnerships. Partners sit opposite each other, and the game uses a standard 52-card deck.

The basics of how to play bridge begin with the deal: each player receives 13 cards. Play proceeds in two main phases – bidding and card play. During bidding, partnerships communicate the strength of their hands through a coded language of bids, ultimately determining a “contract” that one partnership must fulfil. The card play phase follows, where the partnership that won the bidding attempts to win enough tricks to make their contract, whilst their opponents try to defeat them.

Bridge requires strategy, memory, and partnership communication, making it wonderfully stimulating. Don’t let the rules intimidate you – with proper instruction and practice, anyone can learn to enjoy this rewarding game.
