A scenic, easy walk straight from our front door
Nestled between the gentle curves of the Frome and Piddle rivers, Wareham is a town steeped in history, its Saxon walls, and picturesque quay whispering tales of centuries past. The Two Rivers Walk is an ideal way to experience this charming landscape—a flat, easy route that meanders through water meadows, alongside tranquil riverbanks, and past glimpses of Wareham’s storied past.
We would recommend this walk all year round, but in Autumn and Winter the reeds and grasses recede, revealing uninterrupted views of the water. The river’s quiet presence is best appreciated when the landscape is laid bare, its colours shifting in harmony with the sky.
A Walk Through Time
Begin at St. Mary’s Church, right next door. Our Saxon town, once a busy port, saw its trade fade as the rivers silted, diverting commerce to Poole. Yet, the town’s character remains—its old walls, originally built to defend against Viking raids, now offer walkers a striking panorama of the rivers and surrounding countryside.
Following the River’s Path
Follow the road down the side of the cemetery and you will see signs for the towpath (Frome Valley Trail). Once on the towpath, the walk is wonderfully straightforward—simply follow the river’s course. The narrow, winding trail lends itself to peaceful solitude, with only the occasional chug of passing boats or distant voices drifting over the reeds. It’s a place to slow down, to soak in the ever-changing light and the quiet energy of the water.
A wooden sign eventually presents a choice: turn left to return to Wareham or follow the Poole Harbour Trail, a route rich in birdlife that leads towards one of the world’s largest natural harbours.
Returning to Wareham, a walk along the town’s ancient walls offers a fitting conclusion. From this elevated vantage point, the rivers stretch out beyond, their calm waters weaving through the landscape much as they have for centuries.
Whether you seek a contemplative riverside stroll or a step into history, the Two Rivers Walk is a journey through both nature and time. And if we were you, we would finish the day off fireside in our Drawing Room or on our terrace with your favourite choice of drink.
Enjoy the walk—and remember your wellies!
