A Spring Escape to Dorset: Three Days Exploring the Isle of Purbeck from The Priory

Durdledoor Beach on the Jurassic Coast, Purbeck Dorset. Enjoy a stay at Priary Wareham, the gateway to the Jurassic Coast

If you’re dreaming of an English escape this spring, look no further than the Isle of Purbeck—a pocket of Dorset where wild coastline, ancient ruins and unspoilt villages come together in one breathtaking corner of the South West. Tucked along the banks of the River Frome in Wareham, The Priory Hotel offers the perfect base to explore this landscape of sea air, countryside calm and timeless charm.

Whether you’re planning a long weekend or a midweek retreat, here’s a three-day spring itinerary in Dorset to help you soak up the season at its finest, perhaps over the Easter long weekend.

Day One: Coastal Air & Castle Views

Arrive at The Priory Hotel in Wareham, and settle into your room—some with garden views, others with private terraces looking out across the river.

In the early afternoon, head out towards Studland Bay, just a short drive from The Priory. With wide sandy beaches and peaceful heathland trails, it’s an idyllic place for a spring walk.

On the way back, explore Corfe Castle and its surrounding village. Climb the ruins, enjoy the views, and take a moment to browse local galleries and shops.

Return to The Priory in time for a riverside drink before settling into The Garden Room for dinner. Expect a seasonal, locally inspired menu—think wild garlic risotto, Dorset lamb, or asparagus with hollandaise.

Day Two: Jurassic Coast Walks & Local Flavours

After a peaceful night’s sleep, enjoy a full English breakfast at The Priory, then set off to explore the Jurassic Coast.

Your destination: Durlston Country Park, just outside Swanage. Follow clifftop trails along the South West Coast Path with views across the sea and skies full of spring birdsong.

For lunch:

  • Dine at Shell Bay Seafood Restaurant for freshly caught fish and panoramic views, or
  • Ask the team at The Priory to prepare a luxury picnic hamper to enjoy somewhere secluded.
  • Or perhaps book a table at The Bankes Arms Inn, a traditional pub with unbeatable views across the bay. If you’re hoping to visit the Pig on the Beach, it’s just moments away.

On your return, detour through Worth Matravers or walk out to St Aldhelm’s Head for one last hit of coastal drama.

Back at The Priory, enjoy a cocktail on the terrace or unwind in our new underground snug bar, JJs—a candlelit space made for slow sipping.

Dinner awaits once more in The Garden Room, where the evening menu reflects the best of the season.

Day Three: Markets, Villages & Final Wanders

Begin the day after breakfast at Wareham Market (every Saturday), where you’ll find handmade gifts, flowers, and produce from local farms.

Fancy one last outing before heading home? Choose from:

  • Tyneham Village, a WWII ghost town frozen in time, or
  • A gentle walk around Lulworth Cove, known for its turquoise waters and unique rock formations.

Return to The Priory for a relaxed lunch or a classic Afternoon Tea before your travels home in the morning.

Now you know what you are planning to do, you can take advantage of our Long Easter Weekend Package. We look forward to welcoming you soon!
